Siggi, my guide pal told me to head east while the weather was still good. Sounded like a great plan. Of course I woke up and the weather was crap. Oh well! Still it was a good plan and so off I went.
With the bad weather, the allure of Vik drew me in. I stopped just south of town to make a few scouting photos. [I plan to come back to Vik.] With 40mph winds, and water flying EVERYWHERE it was a mess. So of course I was doing all sorts of horrible things to my gear. Photos to come of my set ups and such.
There was a Canadian guy, Shawn, who was in the parking lot seeking some advice. "Is it safe?" he asked the women next to me. I boldly stepped in and said "Follow me. I'll show you the way!" and thus we went and made some pictures together. Nice guy, good times.
I stopped and had lunch in Vik where I met Rachel, a very cool girl from Austin, TX. We discussed the pleasures of less American domination here in Iceland over some some tasty burgers. Ha!
I then headed east, with stops at the bulbous lava fields, then a massive four hour hike in the canyons of Fjadrargljufur. There I met a lovely french family, and had a terrific mountain guide dog.
Tomorrow, glacier hike.
